“Always be humble and gentle.” Ephesians 4:2 [NLT]
I wasn’t exactly sure what it was. As I listened to him strum his guitar and sing, with his wife by his side in perfect harmony, there was something wonderfully profound about their worship style. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but I was drawn into the beautiful cadence of quiet serenity as they worshipped.
They played a two song set, simple and elegant, with nothing but an acoustical guitar and their melodic vocals. They always evoke a stirring in my heart I look forward to but do not quite understand.
I felt compelled to come to the weekly meetings, looking forward to having my heart strings set on fire at the end of their sweet performance.
Each week they played for the group, but something told me they were actually playing for an audience of One. This world has become an unpredictable place filled with uncertainty. I looked forward to Fridays, being serenaded by husband and wife. This sacred time seemed to erase the darkness of the world. This hour and a half had become the best part of my week where I could get lost in the presence of God. It’s as if their songs rendered down the heavens; a modern day Holy of Holies.
After six months of trying to put a finger on what they carried in their worship attitude, I came across the following verse:
“For the Lord delights in His people; He crowns the humble with victory.” Psalm 149:4 [NLT]
Eureka! That was it. This chosen couple performed for the Lord with humility, and He delighted in them, crowning them with victory. They are not perfect; they’ve made their fare share of mistakes, just as we all have. But they walk in God’s grace as they sport their victory crowns, which is evident as they sing.
“So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God and at the right time He will lift you up in honor.” [1Peter 5:6 NLT]
As we look to this lovely couple as an example of gentle humility, I pray this inspires and encourages us to live our lives bringing Glory to Him in all we do. I pray the Lord will delight in us, and lift us up in honor, as His word promises. I pray we use our gifts, no matter what they are, in the most humble way that brings Glory to God.
Peace be with you.
